Acupuncture and Pain Relief

Pain and Its Cost

Pain can be either acute or chronic. Acute pain is a normal sensation triggered by the nervous system (an alarm) to alert you and your body that possible injury may have occurred and you need to take care of yourself.

With chronic pain, the alarm signal has gone haywire. Pain persists for weeks, months or even years. It can affect work, play, sleep and/or your moods for long periods of time. Life can change not only for you but also for those around you. It may affect your relationship with your spouse, friends, co-workers or boss. Many people report feeling trapped in their body and that they have lost control over their life.

You deserve pain relief without costly medications!

According to the Journal of the American Medical Association, in 2005 Americans with aching backs and necks spent $20 billion dollars on prescription drugs and $31 billion for outpatient doctor visits. Many received little or no relief for their money. This is only a small part of the monetary cost.

The physical costs are much greater. Over the counter remedies such as aspirin, ibuprofen and Tylenol have toxic side effects that include stomach ulceration and/or bleeding and kidney damage. In the United States, serious toxicity (leading to hospitalization or death) from their use occurs for an estimated 100,000 to 200,000 people per year. Death occurs in approximately 10,000 to 20,000 people per year who use these over the counter medications.

Why Discover Acupuncture?

Pain free woman Choose acupuncture because you are in pain and want relief! Acupuncture is safe, natural and effective in alleviating pain. Since the 1970’s, it has gained increasing acceptance in the USA and is this country’s fastest growing medicine. It is now the most recommended alternative therapy by medical doctors because their patients are reporting that acupuncture has worked for them.

How Does Acupuncture Work for Pain Relief?

The Chinese state that pain is caused by “stuck” blood and energy. This means that your blood and energy flow are obstructed or slowed down and the qi cannot flow properly.

Acupuncture:

  • Promotes blood flow,
  • That then, allows tissue healing,
  • Which in turn, leads to pain relief.

The acupuncture nodes (points) promote this flow of blood. The insertion of a needle into an acupuncture node (point) activates the neuro/vascular (nerve/blood) systems in the body. It is this simple action that allows the haywire pain message to be turned off.

New Studies Show Acupuncture Provides Relief from Pain

Studies show that people suffering from pain are getting significant relief. Two recent research studies on the relationship between pain relief and acupuncture in the last 10 years have shown promising results.

In one study, conducted in Germany, 52 athletes with severe shoulder pain were divided into two groups - a control group and an acupuncture group. The acupuncture group received acupuncture while the control group was given a "placebo" treatment in which the skin was not penetrated. Each participant rated their level of pain at the beginning of the study and both groups received eight treatments over a one month period. The results indicated that 68% of the athletes reported a positive outcome after the final treatment and those in the acupuncture group reported a 19 point change in their pain levels compared with only an 8.37 change by the control group. This is a significant reduction in pain.

Another study, conducted in 1999 in New Jersey demonstrated that after receiving acupuncture in the Hegu point, (on the hand in the area between the thumb and forefinger), participants reported greater tolerance of pain. Even more exciting was that brain scans (MRIs) conducted before and after treatments revealed dramatic decreases in brain activity in the areas that regulate pain. This study is convincing that actual changes are taking place as a result of acupuncture and not just subjective reports by patients. For more information, check out the sites below.

Why work with Bruce at New Day Acupuncture?

pain free man Bruce has an 85 percent success rate in reducing patients' pain. When treating pain, he uses a style of acupuncture called Meridian or Balance Acupuncture. This means that he uses acupuncture nodes (points) that are located away from the part of the body that feels the pain. For example, you may be experiencing pain in your leg; however, the points stimulated for this situation are in your hand. The injured area is not irritated and it works much faster and with longer lasting results than other types of acupuncture. Bruce has helped thousands of people who thought that they “just had to live with the pain”. He would like to offer you hope based on his past successes.
